Following the first full length trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, bigots are losing their mind over Julia Garner’s female Silver Surfer – but no, the character isn’t trans, despite right-wing outrage and jokes from tans allies.Starring The Last of Us heartthrob Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/ Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/ The Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/ The Human Torch and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/ The Thing, the first full length trailer for the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps gave viewers their first proper look at Marvel’s First Family.The trailer teased some good old-fashioned superhero stakes (literally, because the film is set in the 1960s), as well as stretchy Pedro Pascal – and the introduction of (really) big bad Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his herald, the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner).
The female Silver Surfer was branded ‘woke’ immediately after Garner’s casting, but following the film’s official trailer, conservatives have been frothing at the mouth – while trans allies have had plenty to joke about.Following a post on X from MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) update account @MCU_Updates comparing the Silver Surfer from the 2007 film and Julia Garner’s, X users have been having their say, no matter how deranged.“So they woked the Silver Surfer, pathetic,” one moaned, while another added, “So woke culture reached there as well? And SS now identifies as she/her or they/them?”Other users, however, have been really leaning into the whole ‘The Silver Surfer is trans’ joke, further enraging bigots to hilarious results following the Fantastic Four trailer.
“Congrats on the transition queen,” one joked, with another adding, “What 18 years of estrogen does to a motherf**ker. Congrats queen!!”“B**tch was surged up, 7 years on mones, waist on f**k blue lives,” another wrote in jest. “If i was giving non binary Telfar baddie like her, I wouldn’t know how to act.
”And in the best pun of the century, another named the character the “Silver She/her”.Who is the Silver Surfer in The Fantastic Four: First Steps?The Silver Surfer set to hit screens alongside our beloved quartet is a completely different character to the one seen in Fox’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2007.There portrayed by Laurence Fishburne vocally and Doug Jones physically, the ‘male’ Silver Surfer was originally a herald serving Galactus named Norrin Radd.
In the MCU update, however, Garner’s Silver Surfer is not Norrin post-transition, nor is she a gender-swapped version of the character. First Steps‘ Silver Surfer is based on a completely different character named Shalla-Bal.Shalla-Bal was the immortal Empress of Zenn-La and the lover of Norrin Radd – whom he had to abandon when he became Galactus’s herald.
