Members of Grace United Methodist Church in North Augusta gathered on Easter Sunday to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ through music, scripture and a symbolic butterfly release. The service included a children's musical and a message from senior pastor Rev. Dr.
Cathy Jamieson, who spoke on the theme Rising from Doubt to Faith. She described the Easter story as one of "hide and seek," reflecting on how many people, like the disciples, experience fear, doubt and distance before fully embracing faith. “This morning’s story of resurrection is a story of hide and seek,” Jamieson said.
She acknowledged that people often run or hide from Jesus – sometimes out of fear, disappointment or disillusionment with the church. She added that the church isn’t a perfect place, but it can be a place to seek healing from God. “We are all sinners and are in need of a savior,” she said.
Jamieson encouraged the congregation to seek Jesus in moments of suffering, doubt, and uncertainty, and to remain rooted in community and scripture. She reminded them that Jesus, crucified after an unjust trial, loved all people, sinners included, and challenged the religious, social and political status quo of his time. "Jesus is the final word, and he is victorious," she said.
To conclude the service, the church held a butterfly release, a long-standing tradition that visually symbolizes new life and resurrection. Amber Forest, who serves in communications and adult ministries, said the butterflies help children understand the deeper meaning of Easter. “It’s been a really helpful metaphor for our children to understand why Jesus died and rose again,” she said.
Church member and Life Song band member Brian Grooms praised the service’s message and music. “It’s just a wonderful reminder of what Jesus did for us over 2,000 years ago,” he said. “It’s a wonderful day for everyone to come together and celebrate that.
” Grooms added that the butterflies serve as a fitting symbol of transformation. “When a butterfly becomes a new creature, it’s kind of like the same thing we do when we accept Jesus,” he said..
