Jonathan Sickler, R-Grand Forks, said he has seen the Legislature appropriate “many hundreds of millions of dollars” to support private entities -- including grants for day care centers, tax incentives for the oil and gas industry, value-added agriculture and forgivable loans to hospitals and nursing homes -- so he questioned why private education should be any different. Sen. Justin Gerhardt, R-Mandan, expressed frustration with what he said is a common argument from other lawmakers -- that they won’t support the bill because it wouldn’t benefit their district.
