Bengaluru: In connection with the theft of 830kg of human hair, valued at over Rs 1 crore, from a godown in north Bengaluru, police have arrested one person and detained two others. Efforts are on to track down two more suspects. The incident occurred on Feb 28 at a godown located at Lakshmipura Cross.
According to the owner, a gang was responsible for stealing the hair. The arrested is 25-year-old Yellappa, a resident of Lakshmipura and originally from Gadag. A senior police officer said: "We've detained two more suspects and are currently interrogating them.
Following Yellappa's arrest, we recovered around 300kg of human hair. We expect to recover more once the remaining accused are apprehended." According to police, Yellappa belongs to a group of families that go door to door collecting hair from women in exchange for money or aluminium kitchen utensils.
He and his associates are said to have come to know that a hair trader, 73-year-old Venkataswamy K, had rented a godown in a multi-storey building at Lakshmipura Cross and was storing a large quantity of human hair there. The theft took place around midnight on February 28, when the gang broke open the shutter of the godown using iron rods. They then loaded the gunny bags filled with human hair into an SUV and fled the scene.
Investigation revealed that the culprits were attempting to sell the stolen hair to agents with links to Hyderabad and China..
