What would happen if a hospital’s electronic health record (EHR) suddenly went offline or was permanently obliterated? In a bid to digitize every aspect of healthcare, there are some downsides too that are rarely considered to be of any consequence. However, the recent EHR outage at several Community Health Systems (CHS) hospitals in the US has drawn attention to better contingencies and not getting back to scribbling vitals on a sheet of paper. But that is exactly what the hospital staff ended up doing when a glaringly inadvertent mistake by Oracle engineers caused a five-day digital outage at 45 CHS hospitals in the country.
