A renewed call has been made for a town tip as thousands of new homes are planned. Len Warrington attended the Stamford Town Council annual meeting recently to voice his concerns about the lack of waste disposal facilities. With an increase of housing planned for the town, which has a current population of about 21,000 residents, he is calling for a waste recycling centre.

Len, a former town councillor, said: “Towns like Louth, Market Rasen and Bourne are all places with waste recycling centres. “With the increasing population of Stamford we need somewhere we can take our waste. “I know the town council has virtually no jurisdiction on this but I would like to know if they can push someone in authority.

” A Saturday morning ‘tip’ collection service previously operated from Stamford's Cattle Market car park but was scrapped by Lincolnshire County Council during the pandemic. Despite a campaign it never returned. Len believes the bin lorries ‘addressed the problem to a certain extent’ but that a permanent solution is needed.

Currently Stamford residents’ only local option is to travel to the recycling centre in Bourne. The other nearby centres, in North Luffenham and Cottesmore in Rutland and Peterborough tip can only be used by people living in the authority’s areas. Responding to the concerns, mayor of Stamford Kelham Cooke (Con) has pledged to send a letter to Lincolnshire County Council’s chief executive Debbie Barnes advocating for better facilities.

He said: “In reality, Stamford deserves and needs its own household waste recycling centre.” Campaigning for a tip in Stamford is one of Coun Cooke’s election pledges, should he retain his seat representing Stamford East on Lincolnshire County Council. He is standing against Harrish Bisnauthsing (Lib Dem), Pam Byrd (Ind), Angela Carter-Begbie (Ind), Jack Michael Cranson (Reform UK) and Robin Lister (Lab).
