Three of the cats that were burnt to deathMIRI (April 22): A cat owner in Permyjaya here has lodged a police report, alleging that her pet cats were deliberately set on fire in the early yesterday.Michelle Nelly Simon, 26, recounted the tragic loss of four of her feline companions: Chicki, Jimmy, Remote, and Snow to The Borneo Post today.Three perished in the flames, while the fourth succumbed to smoke inhalation.
“What I want now is justice for my cats that were deliberately set on fire. They were part of my family.“I don’t understand how anyone could commit such a cruel and inhumane act against animals,” she said when contacted.
According to Michelle, she and her family had a potluck dinner gathering at home on Sunday, which concluded around 11pm, after which they began preparing for bed.“At about 1.20am, I smelled smoke and initially thought our neighbours might still be barbecuing.
But when I stepped out of my room, I was shocked to see the kitchen filled with smoke,” she added.Looking out the window, Michelle said she was horrified to find flames engulfing the cages where her cats were housed at the back of the house. Her family immediately worked together to extinguish the fire.
She believes that had she not woken up when she did, the fire could have spread to their home.“I have 13 cats in total—some were given to me, and others were strays I took in,” she explained.On the night of the incident, she said five cats were kept in front of the house, while the remaining eight were in four separate cages at the back.
Meanwhile, Miri deputy police chief Supt Nurasyikin Abdullah confirmed that a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had visited the scene.The incident has sparked outrage among animal lovers and the local community, with many taking to social media to demand justice.A post about the case has since been shared over 2,100 times and attracted more than 80 comments condemning the act.
