Pinewood Prep spent the last two weeks tuning up for the SCISA Baseball playoffs. The playoffs begin this week so after sweeping their region opponents to capture a region title the Panthers played several teams from other divisions to prepare for the postseason. “Our pitchers are throwing really well,” said Pinewood coach Jay Buddin.

“Our bats have been hot and cold but they are starting to wake up and they need to because now is the time. We are about to face some good arms.” Junior Max Poulakis is 6-0 on the hill.

Senior Christopher Kabine and sophomore Camden Abernathy both only have one pitching loss this season. Senior Finley Taylor and junior Grady Fuller are both hitting just below .500 to lead the Panthers at the plate.

Junior Carson Good is hitting just above .400. Pinewood hosted the Lowcountry Wildcats, a Tristate Independent team, and claimed a 12-0 victory April 23 to improve to 22-5 with a 12-0 mark in SCISA 4A Region 3.

The week before, Pinewood faced some quality teams during the Hanahan Invitational Tournament. The Panthers went 1-2 in the tournament, but Buddin said it was a good experience for his squad. “During the HIT we played the No.

1 team out of Virginia, which went on to win the tournament,” he said. “They threw a good pitcher against us but we played well especially after the first inning. We didn’t play well in a loss to May River but then we beat South Lakes of Virginia, which is a good team.

Those games should help us.” The Panthers open the playoffs by hosting Hammond at 6 p.m.

Tuesday, April 29. The winner of that game will play again on Thursday, May 1 while the loser will play again on Wednesday, April 30. “I think we are trending in the right direction,” Buddin said.

“This is a good group of kids that does well together. We’ve been healthy for about two weeks, which is the first time this season that has happened.”.
