"Despite having potential, the tourism sector is hugely neglected in Pune district. Out of the total foreign tourists visiting Maharashtra, only 14 percent visit Pune. The district has historic forts, iconic temples, and scenic spots.
If efforts are taken, the tourism sector can attract huge revenue and create employment opportunities in the district," Pawar said. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also given emphasis on tourism and made huge provisions for the sector in this year's budget. The central govt has decided to help the states that are looking to boost tourism, and Maharashtra should take advantage of the Centre's approach," the deputy chief minister said.
The administration is looking to emulate the Kerala model while preparing the tourism development plan for Pune district. According to the district administration, it has identified five sites which would be developed on a pilot mode. As per the plan, an annual festival would be organised in Baramati-Indapur, which is being developed for hot air balloon activities.
In Mulshi, Velhe, and Bhor tehsils, paragliding activity would be promoted along with ziplining adventure. The administration is also looking at water bodies in the district to promote tourism. The Pawana backwaters are being considered for water sports activities.
After the plan is finalised, financial provision would be made by the state govt for execution of the plan.
