While peace lilies are considered to be easy plants to care for, some people may encounter common problems with the houseplant . Known for its striking white flower -like spathes and vibrant green foliage, brown plant tips are a sign of distress. If you spot the leaves on your peace lily plant are browning, gardening expert Luke Dejahang at Crown Pavilion revealed what could be the problem.
"Brown leaf tips on peace lilies are often used by low humidity," said Dejahang. " Peace lilies prefer a humid environment." This is why regularly misting the plant with distilled or filtered water is encouraged.
"You should mist the plant two to three times a week, and make sure to mist them lightly, ensuring they are not drenched," Dejahang elaborated. "Furthermore, make sure to use distilled or filtered water, as this will help avoid mineral buildup on the leaves." Dejahang explained: "Filtered water is water that has been passed through a filter to remove impurities such as chlorine, fluoride, and heavy metals.
" You can get filtered water by: Using a water filter pitcher Installing a faucet-mounted filter Using a fridge with a built-in water filter Purchasing bottled filtered water. Rainwater is also another option to water and mist the plant with. There are other reasons for a peace lily to turn brown, which includes over-fertilisation.
While the use of fertiliser is encouraged during the growing season (which is now), too much can be problematic. Dejahang said: "Excessive fertiliser can lead to salt buildup in the soil." Even under-water or over-watering the peace lily plant can lead to brown leaf tips.
It's best to check if the first inch or so of the soil is dry first before watering. And not using filtered water can cause the tip of the leaves to turn brown – so make sure it's free from minerals. Another professional tip is to "use room temperature water, as cold water can shock the plant".
