PETOSKEY — Alison Bailey took a different approach to entering her final track and field season with Petoskey. It included a much earlier start than usual, following another standout season on the volleyball court in the fall. “I started this year doing winter track, doing some indoor meets with my sister (Sarah) and with some other Petoskey people,” Bailey said.
So, has she noticed? “Oh definitely, it’s felt that way,” she addd. “I’m slowly making my way up to my personal goals and team goals.”To those standing next to the track, it’s also looked that way.
Those behind her at the finish line can also attest to that. At the start of the 2025 season, Bailey has already set a personal best in the 400 meter dash, helped the 4x200 to almost yet another school record – she’s already part of the record-setting group – while also earning impressive first place finishes in other events. “I’ve had fun running with our relays and just adjusting to everything that’s happened,” Bailey added.
“The weather has been great.”Petoskey BNC: Petoskey soccer, baseball and softball all sweep in Traverse City, start BNC 2-0Top Performers: Petoskey tennis team stays hot atop lineup; Check out the top performers for April 21While some around the area have struggled to find good weather, Petoskey’s track team has had some good days down state, which was great for key meets in Freeland and Cadillac. In the recent Rathbun Invite in Cadillac, Bailey set a new personal record in the 400 in 1:00.
07, ran a season-best in the 200 in 26.44 and helped the 4x100 team to a win in 50.26 seconds, joined by Lyla Janes, Alexandra Petok and Emma Mitas.
Along with her 4x200 teammates of Nevaeh Leonard, Madeline Loe and Mitas, a time of 1:46.31 and a first place finish came in Freeland, just a hair off of an automatic qualifier for states. Meeting those marks ahead of regionals is a big goal of Bailey’s.
“My focus is on early qualifying for states and then just also for the relay teams, the 4x200 and 4x400 hopefully,” she said. Then there’s also that goal of going sub 1 minute in the 400. “Just .
07 (away), so pretty close,” she said. “That’s one of my personal goals right now.”Petoskey hosted Gaylord, Sault Ste.
Marie and Petoskey St. Michael on Wednesday for a senior night event, though Bailey and nearly all of Petoskey’s varsity standouts took the day off ahead of a Mount Pleasant early qualifier meet this Friday. She and other seniors were recognized before the action and she spent the meet encouraging others and talking strategy with her teammates, many she’s been running with since first breaking a school record as a sophomore.
Running with the likes of Loe and Leonard for the past few years in relays is something that’s been key. Signing Day: Petoskey does signing day big, sends 12 student athletes to the college level“It’s amazing,” she said. “I like having everyone back and the connection is there.
It’s really fun. We’ve had one change with one person that was a senior last year, but they’re pretty much all the same.”While the majority of Petoskey’s top athletes rested up Wednesday, there were still some notable performances, from Petoskey and Gaylord, to the Sault Ste.
