Prayagraj: As the Phaphamau bridge over the Ganga River in Prayagraj is set for urgent repair work, the national highway section of the Public Works Department (PWD) reached out to the construction section-4 of the Kumbh Mela department, requesting the continued use of two pontoon bridges near the bridge as an alternative route. The bearings of six of the expansion joints of the Phaphamau bridge have been damaged and the bridge needs to be temporarily closed for the replacement of the damaged components. However, the exact date for suspending traffic has not yet been finalised.

Authorities are currently working on devising a suitable traffic diversion plan to minimise inconvenience to the public. Meanwhile, the Kumbh Mela department has been requested for continued use of two pontoon bridges near the bridge for an alternative route during traffic diversion. These pontoon bridges were constructed during the Maha Kumbh mela to manage massive influx of pilgrims and vehicles.

Vishal Seth, assistant engineer of the PWD section said light vehicles could be diverted over the pontoon bridges to ensure minimal disruption to daily commuters. Meanwhile, discussions are on with the DM to determine suitable alternative routes for heavy vehicles. The repair work is expected to begin by April end, and the department aims to complete it with as little impact on traffic as possible.
