WELCOME to Behind the Lens, a feature that shines a light on the talented photographers in our St Helens Star Camera Club group.

This week, Simon Wilson shares some of his favourite photographs. Simon is originally from Crewe but has lived in the Liverpool area for the past ten years and currently lives in Prescot. Here, in our latest Behind The Lens feature, Simon tells us when his love of photography started and why he doesn’t need to travel too far to take the perfect picture.

I started showing interest in photography from a young age and having great teachers during GCSE and A Levels really encouraged me to continue exploring more. Then in 2019, I purchased my first DSLR, Canon 250D, and began to take things a little more seriously.

As a full-time product designer, I have always been a highly creative person so photography has been a fantastic way to turn my love of the outdoors and nature into a creative process and challenge. Where is your favourite place to take pictures and why? I enjoy the idea of capturing home and the surrounding areas. I like showing off the natural beauty of our local and regional areas to prove you don’t have to travel far or spend much money to be in a truly beautiful landscape.

The north west has it all - wild coastline, rugged mountains and cities steeped in history. Some of my north west favourite locations include West Kirby and Hilbre Island, Derwent Water and anywhere in North Wales. I'm more passionate towards landscape photography but love to learn new techniques when trying out street, sports and product photography.

Finding a perfect landscape location and waiting for the perfect light or weather is the general challenge. But great photos consider what can attract the eye of the viewer and make them stay engaged for just a little bit longer. That could be created by adding a compelling subject, big or small.

You will often see me trying to find a great landscape which has a human on the horizon, as a form of scale and interest. If you could photograph anyone/any place/anything, who/what would it be? For me, it’s not too exotic really but if I had the time and the money I would love to explore the UK and capture the beauty spots of each region. Paddle boarding into the mist, Derwent Water.
