His funeral and burial will take place on Saturday, April 26, at the Santa Maria Maggiore Church in Rome. Meanwhile, the funeral mass was held in the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square.



For twelve years, the Roman Catholic Church was led by Pope Francis. According to a statement from the Vatican, a burial ceremony is being held on Saturday to honour his life and tenure as pope, which was characterised by humility and outreach to individuals from diverse origins and faiths. The US President Donald Trump and Indian President Droupadi Murmu are among the international leaders who travelled to Rome to attend the burial and pay their final respects to the Pope.

Pope Francis’ Funeral Details The funeral for Pope Francis started at 10 am local time on Saturday, which is approximately 1:30 pm (IST). His casket was moved from St. Peter’s Basilica and placed in the open square.

More than 4,000 priests were in attendance at the square, together with 220 cardinals, 750 bishops and priests. Italian Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re will preside over the burial mass. According to ABC News, the pope’s body is placed in a cypress-wood coffin before the funeral, followed by two more coffins that fit within one another, each made of a different type of wood.

The funeral mass concluded at 11:45 am local time, or approximately 3:30 pm (IST). The Pope’s casket is now being taken to be buried. In a statement, it was earlier clarified that Pope Francis will be laid to rest in privacy and that the public will be able to visit his tomb starting Sunday morning.
