Popular Falmouth café bids a 'fond farewell' thanks to rising costs

The cafe will be open this weekend for the final time

A café in Cornwall has announced it is closing for good as rising costs mean it can no longer keep operating. The owner behind Café Strand in , Matthew ‘Matty’ Riedel, said he will have to close the cafe’s doors after more than six years as a result of the cost of living. In a post shared on , he made the announcement with a “heavy heart” and “fond farewells”.

He said: “It’s with a heavy heart that we have to announce Café Strand is closing. Rising stock prices and the cost of living mean we can no longer keep operating. “It’s been an amazing ride — one I couldn’t have achieved without my incredible team.



You guys are truly awesome. We’ve also been so lucky to have such wonderful regulars. Your support has meant the world to us, and we’ll miss you all dearly.

He added that they will be closed for most of this week, with their final opening being this weekend. The post continued: “We’ll be closed this week from Monday, April 21 to Friday, April 25. Our final days will be this Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27, with a reduced menu — so please come by and say goodbye.

” Matty has developed a strong local following since he took over Café Strand in December 2018. He has worked in various places around the world and has brought his love of Japanese and Mexican food to the menu. According to the Café Strand website, Matty’s goal was to “have an unpretentious café experience keeping the dishes simple but using the best quality Cornish produce.

” The announcement was met with dozens of comments from customers expressing their disappointment at the news. One person said: “So sorry to hear this. You were our 'go to' place for breakfast every Shanty Festival.

” Another commented: “This is so sad!! Bit of a Falmouth institution is Café Strand. Good luck with whatever your futures hold for you.” A third wrote: “What a shame, the best Café in town by far Falmouth won't be the same with you, best wishes for whatever you do so sad.

” Someone else added: “Nooooo, what a pity, you're the best around. I'm so sorry to hear this.”.
