Esko made it a successful road trip across the state, scoring twice in the top of the seventh inning and holding host Luverne to one in the bottom in a 4-3 victory on Saturday, April 12. Esko didn’t get on the board until Connor Pearce’s solo homer in the sixth inning. Pearce then followed with the game-tying hit with two out in the seventh.
Sam Haugen followed with a two-run double that gave the visitors the lead. ADVERTISEMENT Luverne had the tying and winning runs on the bases, but after drawing within one on an RBI groundout, Pearce got a fielder’s choice grounder to end the contest. Haugen was 4-for-4 for Esko, while Pearce and Bobby Thornton had two-hit games.
Pearce went the distance, allowing three runs (one earned) and scattering 10 hits. Cambridge-Isanti 8, Duluth East 2 Virgil Brown hit a solo homer for the Greyhounds (0-4) in the second inning, but Cambridge-Isanti pulled away from there on Saturday. Five East players had one hit apiece.
Cole Licari and Jay Nick split the pitching duties with Licari taking the loss. Pine City 7, Two Harbors 6 Jaden Osberg had a double for his second hit and third RBI of the day but was stranded on base as the tying run as the Agates lost a close one on Saturday. Brenner Quinn posted three hits and Dalton Seagren two for Two Harbors.
ADVERTISEMENT Cedarburg 10, Superior 5 Tanner Leno went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, but the Spartans couldn’t prevent enough runs to get a win out of their trip to the Milwaukee area on Saturday. Gavin Mencel added a pair of hits for Superior, which fell behind 6-0 after two innings. The Spartans also dropped a 6-3 decision to West Allis Hale for which no stats were available.
SOFTBALL Northwestern 10, Prescott 9 The Tigers went to the bottom of the seventh inning down 9-4 and came away winners on Saturday. Five walks and a dropped third strike in the decisive inning were part of the Tigers’ recipe for success, but Ashlyn Sutherland had a huge 4-for-5 game with four RBIs, while Ellie Peterson recorded two hits. Luverne 6, Esko 5 Keira Leach recorded 10 strikeouts for Esko but the visitors came up a run short in Luverne on Saturday, April 12.
Clara Swanson had two hits and two RBIs, while Emma Adkins and Lucy Barta also had two-hit games. Mackenzie Hoffman and Hallie Klavu recorded three-run homers in their win over St. Anthony Village, while pitcher Elsie Leino went 6 2⁄3 innings and finished 3-for-4 at the plate. Klavu and Sandra Ribich added two more hits in the Willmar win, while Zumbrota-Mazeppa got to the Rebels late with nine runs in the sixth inning and spoiled a 4-for-4 hitting performance from Ribich.
TENNIS East boys take two of three Duluth East had some success on their home courts, winning two of three matches in competition on Saturday at the Longview Courts. East lost 6-1 to Blaine, but defeated Forest Lake 4-3 and Grand Rapids 5-2. East’s No.
2 doubles team of George Oleksuk and Will Olek won all three of their matches, with their closest being a 10-8 tiebreaker victory over Forest Lake. No. 1 singles Karl Kimber came painfully close to joining them, as he matched easy straight-set wins over Forest Lake and Grand Rapids with a match against Blaine that came down to a 14-12 tiebreaker.
