A Brighton primary school has celebrated a much-improved Ofsted inspection result. St Mark's CofE Primary School has improved its inspection rating from "Requires improvement" to "Good" in several areas. The school, located at Manor Road, serves 156 pupils aged 4 to 11 and is a voluntary aided Church of England primary school.
The latest inspection, conducted on 11 March this year, highlighted key strengths in various categories. The quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, leadership and management, and early years provision were all rated as "Good". The personal development of pupils received an "Outstanding" rating.
Headteacher Jane Fendley has fostered an inclusive and nurturing ethos, living by the mission to "let your light shine". The school is praised for its care, especially for disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Pupils benefit from a range of support, including counselling and art therapy, which helps them thrive socially and emotionally.
The school also excels in early years education and phonics, with children making a strong start in reading, the inspection report said. The "Roots" project celebrates the identities of refugee children, and partnerships with independent schools enhance opportunities in science, arts, and languages. However, the inspection noted areas for improvement.
Writing standards need attention, as pupils struggle with longer texts and accurate grammar. Attendance remains an issue for some pupils, impacting their learning. The school’s safeguarding arrangements are effective, with a strong culture prioritising pupils' welfare.
Governors and school leaders are described as dedicated and reflective, contributing to the significant improvements since the last inspection..
