Gurgaon: Urban local bodies minister Vipul Goel on Saturday asked two private agencies to increase their daily processing capacity at Bandhwari landfill site from 3,000-4,000 TPD to 20,000 TPD. The minister issued these directions while visiting the site and warned of substantial penalties for non-compliance. The first agency, contracted to process 5 lakh metric tonnes (MT), received instructions to process 8,000 tonnes per day (TPD), while the second agency, with a contract for 9 lakh MT, must process 12,000 TPD, directed Goel.
Goel further informed the agencies that if NGT levied any penalty on Haryana govt or MCG for delaying the processing of waste, the private operators will bear the cost. "The legacy waste processing should be expedited and completed within the stipulated timeframe. We are fully committed to cleanliness and environmental protection, and any negligence in this regard will not be tolerated," said the minister in a meeting he held after the visit to the landfill site with municipal corporation officials and representatives of the agencies.
"The agencies have been directed to enhance their waste processing capacity , which is currently 3,000 to 4,000 TPD. Moreover, the minister has strictly warned that the leachate should not be spilled in the surrounding areas. A review of the waste processing will soon be done by the minister," said Mahabir Parsad, MCG additional commissioner.
Goel also reviewed the plant's operations, the condition of the machinery, and the status of waste processing. He said that the Bandhwari plant plays a crucial role in the region's waste management and there should be no delays in its operations. TOI reported on April 23 that MCG imposed hefty penalties — Rs 2.
7 crore — on the two private agencies for their slow pace of work. While the first private agency, tasked with processing five lakh MT of legacy waste, was fined Rs 96.3 lakh, the second agency, responsible for treating nine lakh MT of legacy waste, was fined Rs 1.
74 crore. MCG levied fines against the two private companies due to their delay in processing and bio-mining of legacy waste at the site. As per their work order, the companies were to finish their assigned tasks by July 3 this year.
The authorities had issued letters of interest to both agencies on Feb 11, followed by work orders on Feb 22..
