The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has set a strict deadline for contractors to complete these works by May 31, aiming to ease the gridlock before the rains arrive. Pune is currently facing severe traffic congestion at over 50 key locations, thanks to ongoing civic works that include road repairs, sewer line installations, and underground pipeline projects. With the monsoon season fast approaching, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has set a strict deadline for contractors to complete these works by May 31, aiming to ease the gridlock before the rains arrive as per Times Now.
The work, which started in January, has left daily commuters facing endless delays and growing frustration. Ahmednagar Road Sinhagad Road Katraj-Kondhwa Road Baner-Balewadi Aundh Hadapsar Bibvewadi PMC has made it clear that contractors must complete the work by 31st May. If they fail, strict legal action will follow, especially if any accidents occur due to unfinished sites.
The traffic police have also insisted that contractors must seek permission before starting any work — a rule that has often been ignored, leading to poor traffic management. With heavy rains expected soon, there is a growing fear that unfinished roadwork could worsen the risk of waterlogging and accidents. To prevent this, PMC has asked for new permissions to temporarily close roads at 61 locations for essential pre-monsoon works.
Out of these, 21 locations have been marked as regular waterlogging hotspots that need immediate attention. However, the traffic police have been cautious about granting permissions for construction work in certain areas, including Sinhagad Road and the Pune-Solapur road at Hadapsar, where contractors must submit written assurances to ensure timely completion. As the deadline approaches, all eyes are on the PMC and contractors to see if the city can avoid a chaotic monsoon season.
If the ongoing works are not completed in time, the potential for waterlogging, accidents, and further traffic issues looms large..
