Pune: The long-pending work on a foot overbridge at the busy Chandni Chowk flyover in the city has started. The facility is expected to reduce hardship of pedestrians, especially those trying to cross the highway and its service lanes. Currently, there is no dedicated pedestrian bridge or underpass at the chowk.

People have said that the absence of such a facility was a challenge, while negotiating road traffic to reach the other side of the road. The foundation work of the pillars is underway.

The work of launching a frame and span will be taken up in phases. The bridge will be over 100 metres in length. It will land near a wing that goes towards Bavdhan, while the other end will be near a wing that goes to Bhugaon.

One column of the bridge is coming up at the main carriageway and NHAI is planning its construction without impeding traffic flow Former corporator from the area, Dilip Wede Patil, said he has approached NHAI for the provision of a lift or escalator on both sides of the bridge so that people will not have to climb staircases with luggage. Patil also said that the bridge should have a provision to connect it to the proposed metro station in the area. "It is essential to provide lifts, ramps, or escalators at both ends.

We are in touch with the NHAI for the same," he said..
