Pvt firm employee falls for 20% profit bait, loses 18L

Pune: Cybercrooks lured a resident of Talegaon Dabhade to invest in a finance company via them and duped him of Rs 18 lakh between Dec last year and Jan. The crooks offered a 20% profit to the victim on his investments. After two months, when the victim did not get any money in return, he lodged a complaint with the Talegaon Dabhade police on Tuesday.

In Dec last year, he received a message on his cellphone about earning by investing in a finance company. He was added to a group on a mobile messenger app where 200 members were sharing their experiences about the company and profit.



"The crooks shared a link to the company's website. When the victim checked the website, he found that it was a registered company and decided to invest," the officer said. He said the victim also downloaded the company's app.

The victim initially invested Rs 20,000 and found that he earned Rs 30,000. Later, he was told to transfer Rs 4 lakh for commission. "The victim transferred Rs 18 lakh to different bank accounts provided to him from Dec last year to Jan.

He could see in the app that he earned Rs 80 lakh on his investments," he said. The officer added that when the victim tried to withdraw his money, he was not allowed. When he started pursuing the crooks, he was removed from the group.

The victim realised that he was duped and approached the police. "Investigations revealed that the victim's money was transferred to different bank accounts in Gadchiroli, Mumbai, Tarakeswar in West Bengal, Ongole in Andhra Pradesh, Balasore in Odisha, and Delhi," the officer said. He added that the police have sought the details of these transactions from the respective banks.
