Qatar tribune Tribune News Network Doha Bolstered by the launch of its new College of Sport Sciences, Qatar University (QU) is strengthening its growing international reputation in sport-related subjects—driven by a commitment to academic excellence, impactful research, and contributions to Qatar’s thriving sports ecosystem. The newly established College will build on QU’s rich legacy, capitalising on Qatar’s status as a hub for international sporting events and contributing to the nation’s broader vision for health and well-being. Dean of the College of Sport Sciences, Professor Khalid Bibi said, “The College of Sport Sciences at Qatar University is committed to broadening its influence through advanced research, robust industry partnerships, and collaborative ventures with both national and international entities.

” The University was recently recognized for its sports related subjects by the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, and is the only Arab university to meet the threshold for inclusion in this year’s ranking on the subject. This milestone reflects sustained efforts in developing specialized programs in sport related subjects that integrate expertise from exercise sciences, sport management, and social sciences around sport. QU’s active faculty members have consistently contributed to reputable academic journals and have played an instrumental role in numerous national and international research projects and funded initiatives focused on sports-related subjects.

QU’s journey in sport related studies began in 1983 with the establishment of the Department of Physical Education and Sports within the College of Education. This department was created in response to the country’s growing demand for qualified professionals in physical education and sports training. Building upon its established base, QU then launched the Sport Sciences Program in 2008 within the College of Arts and Sciences to address the dynamic requirements of the sports industry.

In 2021, QU strategically restructured, consolidating the Sport Sciences and Physical Education programs into the newly established Department of Physical Education. This reorganization bolstered QU’s capacity to offer a comprehensive educational and research environment in sport studies and contributed significantly to QU’s breakthrough into the 101–140 range in the QS World University Rankings for Sports-Related Subjects in 2023. By cultivating future leaders in sport and exercise sciences, sport coaching, and sport management, the university seeks to reinforce its stature as a premier institution for sport studies within the region and internationally.

This strategic enhancement of its academic programs and expansion of research collaborations are pivotal in elevating its position in global rankings and empowering the next generation of leaders in sport related subjects. Copy 29/04/2025 10.
