Rajkummar Rao is said to be in talks to play India’s distinguished public prosecutor, Ujjwal Nikam, in a forthcoming biopic. Originally conceived as a passion project for Aamir Khan, the film has taken a new course. As per Mid-Day, with Aamir no longer taking on the starring role, the filmmakers are eager to cast Rao.

Rajkummar Rao’s knack for embodying complex and intense characters has positioned him as a prime candidate for the role, even as he prepares for Vikramaditya Motwane’s upcoming project, where he will portray a sportsman. The film’s team is reportedly refining the storytelling approach to align with Rao’s strengths, aiming for a tougher, more authentic tone. A post shared by RajKummar Rao (@rajkummar_rao) While not yet confirmed, early discussions have been encouraging, and efforts are underway to align schedules given the physically and emotionally taxing demands of both projects.

According to Pinkvilla, Aamir Khan was linked to the Ujjwal Nikam biopic since before the pandemic. Several script drafts were crafted with his involvement, and at one stage, he was slated to lead the cast. However, Khan has now chosen to concentrate on producing the film alongside Dinesh Vijan.

The search for a new lead commenced after this shift, and the project is slated to begin filming in 2024. With the creative vision evolving, the film may adopt a more unpolished and realistic approach than originally envisioned. The biopic will trace the illustrious career of Ujjwal Nikam, the prosecutor who handled some of India’s most significant cases, such as the 1993 Bombay Blasts, the 2008 Mumbai Attacks, and the Gulshan Kumar murder case.

He has also prosecuted high-profile rape and murder cases, cementing his reputation as one of India’s most formidable legal minds. Awarded the Padma Shri in 2016, Nikam’s journey across courtrooms is poised to be vividly depicted on the silver screen in what is expected to be a compelling legal drama.
