After growing up in Brandon and lighting up the youth hockey ranks, she’s logged plenty of kilometres in her journey since branching out to forge her own path in the sport.
She’s committed to the Assiniboine Cougars women’s hockey team for the upcoming season, as the right-shot forward is bringing her talents back to Brandon after a year away from the highest levels of the game. Playing for Team Green at the Delta Hockey Academy in British Columbia a year ago, Brandonite Breigh Rank scored 11 goals and had 18 points in 26 games of U18 girls prep hockey. After a gap year, she's keen to return to the ice with her hometown Assiniboine Cougars.
(Submitted) Rank has been on the ice plenty this past season but considers the last season a gap year, in which she’s learned a lot in doing so. “Honestly I wouldn’t change anything. It was a great experience on and off the ice,” said Rank.
After one season of U15 hockey with the Westman Wildcats and the COVID-cancelled season the following year with the Yellowhead Chiefs, she pursued the prep school route. She spent the first two seasons plying her trade at the RINK Hockey Academy in Winnipeg before spending most of her Grade 12 year at the Delta Hockey Academy just outside Vancouver. She then graduated from Winnipeg’s Shaftesbury High School last June.
All the experiences in a few short years helped shape both the player and the person she is today. “Obviously meeting lots of new people and new experiences, but also skating and working out daily makes you a lot stronger of a player and as a person,” Rank said. A gap year this past winter presented a new perspective, but now she is excited to get back to competitive hockey.
While her high school years were spent eating, sleeping, and breathing hockey, the gap year working the pipeline all across Western Canada with her dad has brought about a new perspective, and now she’s ready to return to the rink and in her hometown. “I look forward to being with teammates again,” said Rank. “When we’re all working together, trying to accomplish the same goal – which is to win.
” “This last year I played a bit, but skated a ton,” said Rank. “I’m very excited to get back to that competitive environment.” The gap year led to the opportunity, also because of the academic offering at the College.
Rank’s travels and experiences opened her eyes to new experiences outside of hockey, for which she’s equally excited. She’ll be studying land and water management at Assiniboine after gaining valuable new insight in the workforce. “I learned a lot about hard work and dedication,” said Rank.
“What I was doing was hard work as a labourer but it sparked an interest in the land management side, so I really learned a lot. “The schooling side is very important to me that I think people overlook. But I’m mostly looking forward to just meeting new people and new experiences.
” Just played in the All-Nations tournament in Winnipeg with the OCN Blues. Rank, who identifies as Metis, is approaching her rookie season as a seasoned veteran who has accumulated plenty of experiences in her hockey journey so far. With Assinboine’s continued assault on the ACHA Division 2 circuit, and work still yet to be completed, Rank, and the Cougars, feel she’ll fit like a glove with a program that has more yet to prove.
