Rats are unwelcome in the garden at any time of year, but especially when you want to be outside enjoying the sun, which is forecast this coming week. So two gardening experts have revealed exactly how to banish rats for good from your garden with two cheap natural plant repellents. Sam Bryant, an animal expert from Glenlivet Wildlife, and lifestyle blogger Ellen Christine, revealed two plants that rats can't stand, due to their sensitive noses.
One fresh herb is particularly good at deterring rodents because of its pungent smell, which is repulsive to rats, according to Sam. They said: "Mint’s strong aroma can mask the scents of other plants, making them less attractive to rats." The expert added: "Incorporating rat-repellent plants into the garden can serve as a natural deterrent.
These plants possess odours or tastes that rats find unpleasant." Ellen Christine, who runs the eco-friendly lifestyle blog Confessions of an Overworked Mom, backed up the claim, adding: “Mint is a natural rodent repellent. "They do not like the way it smells and will avoid it.
Be sure to plant mint around the borders of your garden or the area that rodents are most attracted to.” But she warned that mint is an “aggressive” fast-growing plant that needs to be maintained. She suggested marigolds as an alternative deterrent, which also brighten up the garden.
Sam shared the same advice, adding: “Marigolds emit an odour that rats find unpleasant. Planting them alongside vegetables or flowers can provide an added layer of protection.” Marigolds can also act as a visual deterrent due to their bright colour, as rats are very cautious creatures, according to the expert.
Other plants that could deter rodents include rosemary, lavender, onions, garlic and daffodils, according to Ellen..
