This letter is in reference to The Courant story, “ Spending cap a thorn in state budget compromise ,” by Christopher Keating, on April 27. Fiscal health does not assure economic health. Gov.
Ned Lamont believes that not increasing taxes and staying under the spending cap will restore the state’s fiscal health, but what about the state’s economic health? For years Connecticut has been near the bottom of all states in the amount of revenue it collects and spends as a proportion of personal income. But economic growth requires substantial investment and spending, not just balancing budgets. The governor would like to have more taxpayers, but without investing far more in affordable housing where are new workers and their families going to live?
