Brisbane have delivered a disappointing update for the entire state of Queensland ahead of the series opener.

Brisbane and Queensland have been dealt a bitter blow with Reece Walsh sidelined after suffering a knee injury in a loss to the Warriors on Saturday night. The fullback was injured in the opening minutes and played out the match with his knee strapped, limping at times and being restricted to just seven runs for 50m. He is yet to undergo scans but the Broncos have already confirmed he is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, with a further update to come later this week.

He started at fullback in last year’s first game but suffered a concussion in the opening 10 minutes when NSW debutant Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii delivered a high shot. Walsh recovered to don the No.

1 jumper in the second and third games, won by the Blues to claim their first series victory since 2021. Michael Maguire, who immediately moved on from the NSW coaching job to lead the Broncos, praised his fullback for rallying to finish the Warriors game. “He’s done something to his knee, so it was a credit to him to fight through the game,” Maguire said.

“There is something there we need to have a look at and we need to get a scan around that. We will have to wait and see whether he is right to play over the next couple of weeks.” Walsh was at fault for the killer blow in Auckland, his kick-off to start golden point going dead and allowing Warriors half Luke Metcalf to win the game with a 50m penalty.
