A REPLACEMENT wooden footbridge is set for construction in a Borders village. Scottish Borders Council (SBC) has granted planning approval for a structure to replace the existing steel bridge on King George V Playing Field at Caddonfoot Road in Clovenfords. In his report approving the application, Carlos Clarke, SBC’s lead planning officer, says: “Replacing the bridge and providing improved access to the sports pitch, while also providing for disabled access to it, is a positive development and would not conflict with planning policies in principle.

” A submission with the application, on behalf of the applicant, Clovenfords Community Council, states: “The replacement bridge should follow the line of the existing bridge. It should be of the same height as the existing bridge – to allow clearance above the river level in most flood scenarios; and should be approximately the same width as the existing bridge. “We have specified that the design should allow level disabled access (also for other wheeled items – e.

g. prams) to the raised level of the playing field. Our preference for a wooden structure in place of the current steel structure was guided by similar footbridges in the local area.

“The intended construction period is during the summer months to minimise impact on any fish species. The construction time-scale is estimated at six weeks to minimise the impact of the loss of a dry pedestrian crossing.”.
