Details — which must be approved by the D.C. Council — are expected to be announced by Commanders principal owner Josh Harris and Mayor Muriel E. Bowser on Monday.

The District of Columbia and the Washington Commanders are planning to announce a deal Monday to build the team’s next stadium at the RFK Stadium site on the Anacostia waterfront, according to a person familiar with the plan. That’s according to The Washington Post and other outlets. Details — which must be approved by the D.

C. Council — are expected to be announced by Commanders principal owner Josh Harris and Mayor Muriel E. Bowser at a joint news conference Monday morning, according to the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The agreement, which would come after months of talks between the Bowser administration and the team, became more likely after D.C. gained greater control over the 174-acre waterfront RFK campus through an act of Congress in December.

Bowser often has seen sports as a way to gain economic growth, and Harris grew up cheering for the franchise at RFK and is spearheading the team’s revival after years of woes under Daniel Snyder. Harris has stated his goal of opening a new stadium by 2030. He and his minority partners have long said one of their priorities was to replace Northwest Stadium, the Commanders’ current home in Landover, Maryland, which is widely considered one of the worst venues in pro sports.
