Manchester United’s summer rebuild looks set to begin imminently, with Premier League experience being a key factor in the first-choice signings. In recent memory, signings arriving at Old Trafford have taken a period to adapt to English football, with this season showcasing that. Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, and Leny Yoro have all taken months to look comfortable.
This is all very well for Manchester United in a season when there was clearly not much faith in the manager anyway, but Ruben Amorim will be judged next season, and so signings must be capable of having an immediate impact. With this in mind, United is being linked the strongest with recruiting within the league. This is the case with United’s rapidly advancing move for Matheus Cunha, with personal terms already being discussed for the Brazilian.

Now, according to TeamTalk and journalist Rudy Galetti, this could also follow the Premier League proven route with Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton considered. It is reported that Amorim is hoping to sign two midfielders this summer to replace Christian Eriksen and Casemiro this summer, with the club wanting to bring in the ‘best around’ as replacements. The report claims that United are now internally discussing both Guimaraes and Wharton, who are both admired by the club; however, the chances of signing either of them look slim.
Amorim in particular admires Guimaraes, but the Newcastle midfield general would require a significant outlay, with the North East side unlikely to make it easy for United after last summer’s hostilities. Meanwhile, competition is rife with Barcelona wanting the Brazilian.Manchester City are also sure to be keen on Guimaraes, with Pep Guardiola lauding him as ‘exceptional’ last year, as quoted by Mail Online.
Wharton is a key target for United and has been for months as Amorim appreciates him, but there will be stiff competition and a hefty asking price, with Bayern Munich and Newcastle interested.READ MORE: Who are INEOS? Exploring Man Utd co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s billion-pound businessManchester United already have replacements for Casemiro and Christian EriksenWhile it would be a massive upgrade to sign a player like Guimaraes, in the current state of the club, it is not something that would be easy to pull off, either financially or convincing the player.Due to this, it may be wiser for United instead to look inwards and toward the academy, which has shown in the past few weeks with Tyler Fredricson and Harry Amass’ excellent performances that it can handle the expectations.
So with this in mind, Amorim should be giving the academy midfielders a chance with Tyler Fletcher, Jayce Fitzgerald and Sekou Kone, three players potentially ready to step up and make an impact. All three have had such impressive performances when available for the academy, with Fletcher in particular arguably the U18s star of the season..
