Ludhiana: Civic authorities, who have stepped up efforts to provide canal-based water supply to city residents, are facing multiple challenges, one of which is public objection to laying of the water supply line on Jeevan Nagar main road. Area councillor Gaurav Bhatti attributed the resistance to what he claimed was an improper method of laying the water supply line under the World Bank's canal water supply project. He said that instead of digging the vacant space on the left side of the road to lay the line, the road was being dug up along with the divider.

The road, which was built around one year ago after a decade long wait, receives heavy traffic in the morning and evening. However, officials of the water supply and sewerage board claimed that work of laying the water supply line had been planned in detail. They said that a GPRS survey was done before starting the work and the other side of the road was not dug up because of the presence of sewer lines or underground cables of telecom companies.

Saying that they chose to dig at the vacant spot to ensure uninterrupted water supply to city residents, they added that the company laying the water supply line would get the road repaired. Similar difficulties are likely at other places as well. Officials also faced considerable resistance in the construction of overhead reservoirs, which could start only after meetings with the public and elected representatives.
