Here’s how the game went down.
The stars Big Spring's Rilee Stewart sets to pitch as Big Spring defeated Northern 1-0 on Tuesday, April 29, 2025 in Newville. Dan Sostek Rilee Stewart led the way for Big Spring on the mound. The hurler tossed seven innings, allowing five hits while striking out six.
Victoria Rinaldi added the lone RBI in the game, going 1-for-1 with two walks. Sammy Magee pitched well for Northern, tossing 6.1 innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out four.
Sabrina Paulin and Izzy Hobby each had two hits for the Polar Bears. Game-deciding moments The two teams played to zeroes for a while. Northern looked like it may have taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth, as Paulin singled, and Keith launched a ball to dead center.
The wind would take the ball in though, and end the inning. Then, in the top of the fifth, Trinity Artman would lead off the first with a single, and advance to second on a passed ball. But Kendall Boring-Gutshall would make a great read on a fly ball by Ashley Yoder, and was able to double off Artman at second, snuffing out a potential rally.
Boring-Gutshall would then put up one of the biggest plays of the game in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs and a runner on second, she’d leg out an infield single on a routine ground ball, putting runners at first and second with two outs for Rinaldi. Rinaldi would come through, laying a ground ball up the middle to scoring Lily Raudabaugh, as the run would be all the Bulldogs needed.
They said it “I think it means that we’re pretty solid for the future games. We have that energy, and if we continue to have that energy, then that things are going to happen for our team and for our players.” - Big Spring’s Victoria Rinaldi on building momentum “It’s good pressure on the defense, pitching.
.. getting ready for districts coming up.
Obviously this will move us up. We’re 13-4 now, and we’ve got a lot of teams ahead of us. This will move us up a little bit.
But games like this definitely get us ready for districts.” - Big Spring coach Mike Gutshall on playing in high-pressure games “This team has a lot of potential, and going forward, we’re not nervous, because we know what this group can do, and we haven’t really shown it yet. So, I think there’s still a lot that this team can accomplish.
Just gotta get everything together. It’s just taking a little longer in the season, but I think they’ll get there. And yeah, hopefully turn around sooner than later.
” - Northern coach Emily Quatrale on the team’s confidence as playoffs approach. Thanks for visiting PennLive. Quality local journalism has never been more important.
