Robert Edmund Welcyng, 91, passed away in Anchorage with his wife by his side on March 28, 2025. At his request, there will be no services. Robert was born on August 1, 1933, to Edmund and Anne Welcyng in Glens Falls, New York.
He was the oldest of three children. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Abigail Welcyng; sons, Anthony Welcyng and Thomas Welcyng; brother, John David Welcyng of Queensbury, New York; sister, Joanne Edden of Vermont; and many cousins, nephews, and nieces. Robert graduated from Glens Falls, New York, high school.
He earned a B.S. in Physics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1960.
Robert served in the USAF as an electronic technician. Robert first came to Alaska in 1960 as a field engineer with the Sperry Gyroscope Company. He helped establish the USCG LORAN C stations at Sitkinak Island and Point Clarence.
Robert moved to Anchorage in 1962 and was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration as an electronics engineer. He retired in 1997. Robert enjoyed many years of sailing in Resurrection Bay and Prince William Sound.
He was an avid reader, enjoyed studying mathematics and the Indonesian language, writing computer programs, and corresponding with friends around the world. He loved classical music and enjoyed sitting down at the piano. In lieu of flowers, donate through the Child Fund International.
