The National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) has drawn the government’s attention to the resignation of the head of the Right to Information (RTI) Commission, retired Supreme Court Justice Upali Abeyratne, and the difficulties experienced by the vital body. The NMSJ alleged that the non-operation of the RTI Commission may undermine the whole process. The civil society organisation also expressed concern over the failure on the part of the powers that be to appoint a Commissioner in spite of that person receiving the blessings of Sri Lanka Press Institute and other affiliated associations and the Constitutional Council.

The NMSJ pointed out that the vacancy exists since 01 January, 2025. The civil society group pointed out that the RTI Commission has been affected by shortage of qualified personnel, including lawyers..
