The Saints haven't drafted quarterback in the second round ever. 2025 is setting up like the year the streak may get broken

The New Orleans Saints' streak of not picking a quarterback is still alive. For another year, Archie Manning remains the first and only quarterback the franchise has drafted in the first round. That was 54 years ago.

The Times-Picayune's Rod Walker pointed out that's not the only extensive NFL draft streak. Manning may have been the last quarterback the Saints in the first round, but they've never drafted a quarterback in the second round. It feels as if Kellen Moore is trending towards breaking that trend.

Shedeur Sanders is reportedly not on the table, so Tyler Shough and Jalen Milroe feel like the next best bets.Milroe is the player with much more variance between he and Shough. Milroe has the lower floor, but his athletic ability gives him a substantially higher ceiling.

Because of the discrepancy between floor and ceiling, Milroe is seen as a project and someone who will likely need a year to develop under Kellen Moore. The Saints rumored interest in moving back into the first round would suggest they'd pick a quarterback in the second round. It's just a matter of the player they identified is still available.

In case you were curious, the Saints have picked one quarterback in the third round. The Saints drafted Garrett Grayson 75th overall in 2015. Essentially, the Saints have not prioritized the quarterback position in the draft highly.

Jake Haener was a fourth round pick. Haener would be considered a high investment. You have the luxury to not value quarterbacks in the draft when Drew Brees is your quarterback for over a decade.

They grabbed him through free agency, and that has been commonplace for the Saints. Since the turn of the century, all of the Saints starting quarterbacks have come to New Orleans via free agency. In 59 years, the Saints have picked two quarterbacks in the first three rounds.
