SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - As the system grows, so does the need for maintenance, which means more chances for flooding, especially during severe weather. City officials know it's an issue and say they're working on solutions.

One idea city leaders are considering would hit you right on your utility bill—a brand new stormwater utility paid for by residents. This week, the City will hold a series of meetings throughout each district to get input on plans for the proposed stormwater utility. In the past, the City has used several funding sources to handle growing issues with stormwater drainage, including money from SPLOST taxes and the general fund.

The idea behind creating this new utility would help pay for all services related to managing stormwater. If the idea becomes reality, residents would pay for services based on the impact of their property. For example, if you have more green space that absorbs water, you'd pay less than a property that doesn't drain as well.

The first public meeting is tonight in District Three. If you want to attend, it runs from 6 to 8 p.m.

today at the Pennsylvania Avenue Resource Center.A city spokesperson tells us they have explored the stormwater utility concept at least twice in 15 years through various studies. We have all the information you need about this week's sessions, and where you can weigh in online - click here.
