Security agencies have begun engaging communities in Rivers State to safeguard oil pipelines and other critical national infrastructure. The initiative was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by the state police commissioner, Olugbenga Adepoju. According to Mr.
Adepoju, the engagement is focused on communities in Gokana Local Government Area and aims to prevent potential attacks on national assets. The agencies involved include the police, army, navy, air force, Department of State Services (SSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). He noted that the directive came from Rivers State’s sole administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, who instructed security agencies to collaborate with local stakeholders to maintain peace and security.
“Federal assets in these communities are shared heritage, and it is a collective responsibility to protect them,” Adepoju said. He added that past incidents of pipeline vandalism highlight the need for close cooperation with locals, urging residents to provide credible intelligence. To support this effort, security agencies have set up communication channels to gather feedback, understand community grievances, and integrate local concerns into broader security strategies.
Gospel Kpee, the sole administrator of Gokana LGA, affirmed the community’s commitment to working with the government in promoting peace and safeguarding infrastructure..
