Twelve-year-old Sethmi Premadasa became the youngest Sri Lankan ever to perform at the world-renowned Musikverein, in Vienna, last week, delivering a captivating piano performance as part of an exclusive international concert. The prestigious event brought together a select group of top young musicians from around the world, including performers from China, Japan, the United States, Turkey, Canada, Austria, and Thailand. Miss Premadasa’s performance stood out not only for her exceptional talent but also for her poise and artistry at such a young age.
Sethmi shared that she felt “a little nervous at the beginning” performing alongside such an exceptionally talented global group, but quickly found her confidence once she started playing. “I had a blast,” she said, beaming after the performance. Currently a seventh-grade student at Kromrey Middle School in the United States, Sethmi balances her love for music with a wide array of interests, including mathematics, robotics, and swimming.
She was first guided to the piano at the age of five by her mother, whose encouragement sparked a deep passion. She now studies under the guidance of acclaimed piano teacher Daniel Kuzuhara. “The secret to performing at this level is dedicated practice,” Sethmi noted.
“You have to put in the work.” Looking ahead, Sethmi hopes to train even harder and perform at more international destinations, continuing to grow as both a musician and a global representative of young Sri Lankan talent. The Musikverein, often hailed as one of the most acoustically perfect concert halls in the world, has hosted countless legends over its long history.
Sethmi’s performance, on this iconic stag,e marks a milestone in her musical journey and serves as a source of inspiration and pride for young Sri Lankans around the globe. Sethmi is the daughter of Professor Kirthi and Milanki Premadasa. She is also the granddaughter of the late President’s counsel A.
