FARGO — The canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis, first set for Sunday, April 27, has been delayed following the passing of Pope Francis. Acutis, who died of leukemia at age 15 in 2006, was poised to become the first millennial saint. Acutis, known for creating an online exhibit documenting more than 100 Eucharistic miracles, was named venerable in 2018.

He’s often referred to as the “patron saint of the internet.” A new documentary titled "Carlo Acutis: Roadmap to Reality" premieres Sunday, April 27, and follows three North Dakota high school students, including Shanley High School senior Emily Gietzen, on a spiritual pilgrimage to Rome in summer 2024. The trip was organized by the University of Mary.

“It’s remarkable and such a privilege and honor to have been a part of it,” Gietzen said of the film. She shared how Acutis’ story became personal after her mother was diagnosed with a brain tumor just weeks before the trip. “Knowing Carlo’s story and how he embraced the plan God had for him, I was able to pray and ask him to help me accept it and pray for her healing,” she said.

Her mother’s tumor was later found to be non-cancerous. “You hear about saints from the olden times, but Carlo used technology for good. That’s inspiring for Gen Z,” Gietzen said.

The film explores how Acutis’ legacy can resonate with a new generation, and Gietzen hopes it encourages others. “We’re not called to be saints in a few years or yesterday. We’re called to be saints today,” she said.

The film opens to the public on Sunday in theaters including West Acres Cinema ..
