Teddy Sheringham has blasted Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana for his performances and told the 29-year-old to 'hold his tongue.' Ruben Amorim's No. 1 has had a campaign to forget, with plenty of individual errors leading to goals in both the Premier League and Europa League, causing rumours to surface that suggest the Red Devils may soon look to go in a different direction between the sticks.
Namely, during a recent European clash against Lyon, in which the English side prevailed 7-6 on aggregate, Onana made headlines for his war of words with ex-United ace Nemanja Matic, who now plays for the French side. After claiming that his team were "way better" than their opponents in the first leg, Onana was at fault for both of Lyon's goals. When the second leg arrived and United took an early lead, the Cameroonian could be seen outwardly celebrating in front of the travelling supporters, who had booed him throughout both matches.
Having been dropped by Amorim in favour of Altay Bayindir for a league clash with Newcastle after the first leg and continuing to produce lacklustre outings in goal for United, Sheringham has warned Onana to continue the passion but perhaps rein in his emotions and focus on results. "With Andre Onana, I'm all for the passion, but it's not about what's happened in the past, and it's not about saying what you're going to do, it's all about results and performances on the pitch," Sheringham told CasinoHawks. "You need to shut up at times and just button your lip and just hold your tongue if you can.
But I fully understand the pressure these people are under." While Onana's on-field antics have been subpar this term, his exchange with Matic saw him branded one of the club's "worst ever goalkeepers" after he claimed United were much stronger than their opponents. Matic, responding directly to the goalkeeper's comment, stated: "You know, I respect everyone, but to say that, then you need to give the answer.
"If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United's history, you need to take care of what you are talking (about). If David de Gea or Peter Schmeichel or (Edwin) Van der Sar said that, then I would question myself. "But if you're one of the statistically worst goalkeepers in Man United's modern history, then he needs to show that before he says (anything).
We will see." Despite United progressing to the Europa League semi-finals, Onana's quarter-final performances and outspoken social media posts didn't exactly paint him as confident. In the club's latest outing against Bournemouth, the goalkeeper's distribution came under fire.
A poor pass into Luke Shaw led to Antoine Semenyo's first-half strike, giving the Cherries a 1-0 lead in a clash that ended 1-1. The Athletic reports that on the back of this season, Onana could leave Old Trafford this summer and seek pastures new, with Amorim in search of a new No. 1.
