The Trump Administration’s focus on opening out to Putin and Zelensky and ending a ruinous, tragic war in Ukraine has sometimes seemed quixotic or even naive; but despite all that, thoroughly admirable, no question. Because Pyrrhic war may indeed bring some kind of victory, but at the unpardonable cost of wrecking an entire country. Searching out a peace over there does seem the way to go, however difficult it may be.
However, obsessionalism re that tragic theater has obscured another where war would be even more deleterious in its repercussions: Taiwan. As all know, China has been interminably flying over that vulnerable island democracy, as though a golfer taking numerous practice swings before the Masters – yes, preparing for a full-scale invasion that would be utterly disastrous, not only to the 23 million who cling to their fragile freedom there, but to the entire world. Given that just one concern, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, makes over 90% of those chips that take painstaking labor to power computers now so vital everywhere, not least in the U.
