SK Telecom announced on April 25 that it will implement enhanced customer information protection measures starting April 28, including the provision of free SIM card replacements, to address security concerns related to a cybersecurity incident caused by malware. During a briefing on enhancing customer information protection measures held at the SK Telecom headquarters in Euljiro, Seoul, CEO Yoo Young-sang expressed regret for the inconvenience and anxiety caused to customers and the public. He stated, “We sincerely apologize to our customers who trust and use SK Telecom.
As an additional measure, we will provide free SIM card replacements for all customers who wish to have one.” This initiative comes in the wake of previous measures, including the "SIM Protection Service" and the strengthening of the Fraud Detection System (FDS) to block abnormal authentication attempts, aimed at alleviating customer anxiety as much as possible. SK Telecom expects that combining the enhanced Fraud Detection System, which effectively functions similarly to a SIM replacement, with the free SIM replacement service will provide even greater customer protection.
In response to the recent cybersecurity incident, SK Telecom has elevated the standards for blocking abnormal authentication attempts to the highest level to prevent illegal SIM cloning. The company is also continuously enhancing real-time monitoring. Additionally, SK Telecom plans to upgrade its services by May to make the SIM Protection Service available while roaming.
“SK Telecom prioritizes customer trust and is committed to strengthening our security systems and enhancing customer information protection measures," said SK Telecom CEO Yoo Young-sang. "We aim to emerge from this incident as a responsible company that stays true to its fundamentals.”.
