FORNEY — The Hallsville Lady Bobcats' clutch genes and dominating pitching paved the way to a Game 1 victory Thursday night over the Denison Lady Yellowjackets in the Class 5A bi-district round. Denison powered its way onto the board first with a home run by Addison Ciaccio. Lindsey Dubberly struck out the next three batters with Denison leading 1-0.
After Dubberly allowed two consecutive walks, Denison took a 2-0 lead on a RBI single by Hailey Shrum followed by another RBI single by Ciaccio to give the Lady Yellowjackets a 3-0 lead. The Hallsville bats woke up in the third inning after scoring three unanswered runs. Hope Miles drew a walk, Ella Baird doubled to bring in Miles, Baird scored on an error and Libby Ford brought in Mackenzie Griffin to tie the game at three a piece.
Dubberly's pitching strengthened as the game went on, never facing more than four batters in the following three innings. Hallsville took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after Ford launched a RBI-double to bring in Griffin. The Lady Bobcats scored two unanswered runs in the bottom of the sixth inning courtesy of a walk and hit by pitch to set up a RBI fielder's choice to bring in Makenna Ellis and a RBI-ground out to bring in Maddie McKinney and take the 6-3 lead.
Dubberly struck out the side in the seventh inning and secured the 6-3 comeback victory for Hallsville. Baird and Dubberly both went 1-3 with two RBIs, and Ford led the Lady Bobcats by going 2-3 with two RBIs. Dubberly was dominant in the circle, pitching all seven innings and allowing three hits, three runs, four walks and striking out 16 batters.
Hallsville and Denison will face off again at 6 p.m. Friday in Forney.
