FAIRFIELD — The unemployment rate in Solano County dropped to 5.1% in March despite having fewer local jobs. The March employment report stated that there were 144,300 jobs in Solano County in March, down 200 from February.
However, overall civilian employment was up 1,700, from 206,600 to 208,300, the Labor Market Information Division of the state Employment Development reported. The unemployment rate in February was 5.2%.
It was 5.4% in January. The jobless rate in March 2024 was 4.
9%. The civilian workforce was reported at 219,400, up from February's count of 217,900. There were 11,100 residents seeking unemployment benefits in March, down from 11,300, the EDD reported.
The state unemployment rate was 5.3%, down from 5.5%, the rate it was in January and February, and just slightly higher than the March 2024 mark of 5.

The local job losses were scattered across the employment sectors. Construction had 100 fewer jobs, at 10,500, while the Trade, Transportation, and Utilities sector also was down 100 jobs at 28,200, and the Professional and Business Services sector also lost 100 jobs at 10,800. Those losses were balanced by gains in local government, including 100 in local education and 100 in special districts, the EDD reported.
Solano County ranked 21st among the state's 58 counties. The lowest jobless rate was in San Mateo County at 3.5%, while the highest rate was in Colusa County at 17.
