Over the last few days, several Pixel smartphone owners have reported issues with delayed notifications following the April 2025 update. Spotted by Android Police , recent threads on Reddit detail the notification delays with users reporting that messaging apps, emails, WhatsApp calls and more are delayed, particularly when the phone is locked. Users report that notifications come flooding in once they unlock their devices.

It’s not clear how widespread the problems are. I haven’t noticed any delayed notifications on my Pixel devices, but I also haven’t been using a Pixel as my daily driver for over a week. (I’ve had my SIM in an iPhone XS as part of a 30-day challenge from MobileSyrup device manager Dean Daley to use an old phone .

) That said, I have had issues with unreliable and delayed notifications on Pixel phones in the past. And, as Android Police pointed out, the March 2025 update for the Pixel Watch also messed up notifications. So it’s not unlikely that a bug slipped through in the April update for Pixel phones.

If you are experiencing notification issues on your Pixel, it might be worth dropping a comment on the Reddit thread. The official Pixel Community Reddit account appears to be monitoring at least one of the two threads, which hopefully means Google is aware of the issue and working on a fix. Despite users reporting an uptick in delayed notifications after the April update, some Redditors replied and blamed the issue on Doze, a feature added way back with Android 6.

0. Doze is a power-saving feature that kicks in when a phone screen is turned off for a while to limit apps from accessing the network or running CPU-intensive services. After entering Doze, Android phones will periodically exit Doze and run pending jobs like syncing with the network.

Some claim Doze is the main culprit behind delayed notifications, and that it has been a problem for years. However, the Android Developers website sets out ways to deliver priority notifications, so I’m not sure Doze is entirely to blame since there are ways to bypass it. Whatever the issue, here’s hoping Google figures out a fix sooner rather than later.
