A MACQUARIE Hills man accused of attempting to murder his father by repeatedly trying to suffocate him with a plastic bag in an alleged prolonged and harrowing attack while the 71-year-old was in bed on Tuesday has been refused bail. Login or signup to continue reading Timothy David Grenadier, 35, was represented by solicitor Drew Hamilton when he appeared in Belmont Local Court on Thursday charged with attempting to strangle or suffocate with intent to murder. Grenadier did not enter a plea or apply for bail and wept in the court dock before he was led away.
According to police, Grenadier had allegedly attempted to suffocate his 71-year-old father, Peter Grenadier, at the family home in Macquarie Hills about 10.30am on Tuesday. The Newcastle Herald understands Grenadier's father had been at a medical appointment earlier on Tuesday and had returned home to rest.
He had taken sleeping tablets and pain medication and had a CPAP machine and an eye mask on when he fell asleep in his bedroom. But it is alleged that at some point the elder Grenadier felt someone straddling him and awoke to find his son trying to hold a plastic bag across his mouth and nose. He tried to fight him off and the pair allegedly struggled as Grenadier is accused of repeatedly attempting to suffocate his father with the plastic bag in an attack that police allege lasted minutes.
At one point the pair fell onto the floor and Grenadier is accused of grabbing an item of clothing that he also allegedly used to attempt to suffocate his father. Eventually, Grenadier is accused of desisting and when his mother came home he is alleged to have said: "You just need to leave, you need to leave mum some money and leave me here to sort out the house and take care of mum". Grenadier's father and mother left the home and later paramedics were called and the alleged suffocation attempt was disclosed to police.
Grenadier was arrested at the Macquarie Hills home at 5am on Wednesday and charged by detectives. Police allege that crime scene officers seized a number of items, including gloves and a plastic bag. Grenadier will remain behind bars until the matter returns to Newcastle Local Court in June.
