Sophia Hatcher, Paul Marpe voted the Ames Tribune's female and male Athletes of the Week

Ames girls track and field athlete Sophia Hatcher and Gilbert boys track athlete Paul Marpe were voted the Ames Tribune's Athletes of the Week.

Ames girls track and field athlete Sophia Hatcher and Gilbert boys track and field athlete Paul Marpe were voted the Ames Tribune's female and male Athlete of the Week winners for the week of April 13-19.Hatcher won female Athlete of the Week with 84% of the vote.Hatcher broke the 21-year-old Ames girls high jump record during the Jim Duncan Invitational on April 12 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Hatcher recorded a jump of 18 feet, 9.5 inches to break the old Ames mark of 18-5 set by Kersten Thorgaard in 2004. She won the event by 10.



25 inches over North Polk's Frankie Huether.Marpe took male Athlete of the Week honors with 57% of the vote.Marpe won the boys 200 and he helped Gilbert place first in the boys distance medley relay at the Gilbert Invitational on April 8 at Gilbert.

Marpe clocked in at 22.40 in the 200, and he ran the opening leg on a distance medley team that finished in 3:37.90.

Marpe also placed second behind teammate Will Hawthorne in the 100 after crossing the finish line in 11.58.Joe Randleman covers high school sports for the Ames Tribune.
