Just before Holy Week, I was in Glendale, catching up with longtime friends over lunch at Americana—Roger Oriel, the visionary behind Asian Journal and Balikbayan Magazine and Eric Elnar, our Philippine Trade Attaché. What began as a warm reunion soon turned contemplative, as we revisited a painful memory that continues to haunt us six years on. It was a moment on the cusp of greatness.
We were about to launch a nutraceutical brand, years in the making. The mastermind behind it was Jim, a Greek-American married to a Filipina, whose drive and passion fueled the venture. With a manufacturing facility ready in Las Vegas and a go-to-market plan focused on Asia—particularly the Philippines—everything was set.
I had been invited to be part of the project through Roger, and excitement was high. But life had other plans. Before the brand could debut, Jim—only 57—collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest.
Just like that, the dream died with him. There was no succession plan, no transition strategy, no one ready to carry the torch. All the groundwork, investment, and vision evaporated in a moment.
As we reminisced, we were reminded that life is full of unexpected turns. That reflection—fitting for the Lenten season—now echoes louder. Lent is a time of pause, humility, and preparation.
So too should it be for every founder when it comes to their life’s work. A legacy isn’t just what you build—It’s what you Leave behind Jim’s story is heartbreaking not because his dream wasn’t brilliant, but because it had no lifeline beyond him. Sadly, his case isn’t unique.
Far too many founders believe succession and governance can wait. Emboldened by health, success, and drive, they tell themselves they’ll handle it when things “settle down.” But legacy doesn’t wait.
And when death comes unannounced—as it often does—it leaves behind chaos if no structure is in place. The greatest gift a founder can leave: Clarity Governance is not just a business tool. It’s a form of love, stewardship, and foresight.
It’s about documenting your vision, involving successors early, clarifying roles, and institutionalizing decision-making. It’s about creating agreements, structures, and boards that outlive your presence. It’s not about losing control—it’s about creating continuity.
Founders must ask: • If I am gone tomorrow, who leads? • Will the business survive me? • Have I written down what matters most—our purpose, our values, our strategy? Because the dream isn’t enough. It must be transferred, protected, and empowered by others. Post-lent reflection: Start now, while you still can As the Lenten season passes and the world resumes its busy pace, let this be your wake-up call.
In the spirit of Lent’s quiet introspection, reflect not only on faith—but on the legacy you are building. Succession isn’t about retirement. It’s about ensuring what you’ve started doesn’t end with you.
That sunny afternoon in Glendale, we celebrated friendship—but we also carried the weight of what could have been. Jim had the vision, the passion, the plan. But without structure, it all vanished—like a candle snuffed out by a sudden wind.
Let that not be your story. Prepare. Build your governance.
Plant the seeds of continuity. Because the true measure of success is not what you build—but what you leave that continues to grow. *** In response to the growing need for clarity and direction among family-owned businesses, the W+B Family Governance Leadership Masterclass returns for its second edition this May 21 & 24, with graduations in Cebu (May 27), Manila (May 31) and Iloilo (June 28).
