ST. MICHAELS — The St. Michaels commissioners plan to invest $215,000 from this fiscal year and next fiscal year into three new police vehicles for the St.
Michaels Police Department. “These guys are always in need for updated equipment,” Alfred Mercier, commissioners president, said. The company that St.
Michaels is buying the police vehicles through will allow the commissioners to pay for one vehicle with this year’s fbudget and two in next year’s budget. The town will receive all three vehicles up front. “These are all coming out of speed camera funds that are held in a separate account, so unless there’s going to be changes in the FY26 budget, this should be something that we can accomplish,” Don Richardson, town manager, said.
While the budget for the vehicles is $215,000, the three vehicles will cost $146,820. The rest will be used for graphics, lights and equipment. Jeffery Oswald, St.
Michaels chief of police, credits the St. Michaels commissioners for their help getting the new vehicles. “I would have to thank to the commissioners because they’re always have the support on keeping our equipment up-to-date to match other agencies surrounding us,” Oswald said.
“We want to keep our emergency vehicles safe and well equipped so we can provide public safety to the town. “Our fleet is aging, so having the cost and the liabilities of an aging fleet, so not only it will save us money on maintenance, it will provide a better look to attract officers with new equipment and new vehicles.”.
