A teaser trailer for Stranger Things Season 5 is set for Netflix's big Tudum event at the end of May. While viewers will finally learn what the mysterious final season is about and when it will potentially premiere, fans have become sleuths to suss out potential cast members besides those already announced. A few of them believe that the fifth season will have a portion set in the past, and a young actress named Birdy is set to play the younger version of Winona Ryder's Joyce in the show.
Stranger Things Season 5 to feature young Joyce?Earlier this week, a Stranger Things fan posted a photo of actress Birdy's Instagram feed on X, "A potential casting for young Joyce in the #StrangerThings5 flashbacks. She is followed by multiple crew members and is winona’s literal long lost twin wtf. This is not confirmed just a spec and don’t dm or harass the actress.
" Another fan shared a link to Birdy's acting CV,V which listed a recurring role on Stranger Things Season 5. She had previously done modeling and appeared in music videos. Her other credits include the short films Escort and Twin Flame in 2024.
The Netflix series could be her big breakthrough Since the prequel play Stranger Things: The First Shadow was released in London in December 2023, it is officially confirmed that the show and play are connected. The play, which is written by Kate Trefry, depicts the Creel family's arrival in Hawkins in 1959. Trefy has also written Episode 6 of Season 5.

The play is set 24 years before the Netflix series begins and is an origin story for Henry Creel, aka Vecna. Season 5 will also feature Alex Breaux, who plays Dr Brenner in the play; he began experimenting on young Henry in the past.
In the play, younger versions of Joyce, Hopper, and Bob Newby are also integral to the story. In the London and Broadway transfer, actress Alison Jaye plays Joyce Maldonado. Before becoming mother to Will and Jonathan Byers, Joyce was an ordinary student who wanted to get away from her small Indiana town.
